VETERINARY SURGEONS
FOR AGRICULTURAL £2PARTMENT THREE APPOINTED BY GOVERNMENT. There were eighteen applications for the four positions for examining veter inary surgeons under the New Zealand Department of Agriculture. The four positions command a salary of £4OO per year, rising to £490, with regulation travelling allowances, half-salary during the voyage out, first-class passages for single men, and £l5O towards tli© passage money of married men. The applications were considered by the High Commissioner and Mr Alex ander Crabb (Secretary to the Department), and a number of the applicants were personally interviewed, with the result that three have been chosen to fill the positions. The fourth post has been filled by an Australian. Th© three appointed are: Mr Dudley Gill (Blanaford, Dorset), Mr C. V. Dayus (Graven Anns, Shropshire), and Mr Peter McGregor (OolChester). Mr Gill, who is 23, has acted as assistant and locum tenens to veterinary surgeons in various parte of Dorchester, in Huddersfield, and in Bath. He gained practical experience in meat inspection while training at Edinburgh. Last June he sat for the examination in veterinary State medicine, and was successful in obtaining his diploma. Mr McGregor is 33, married, and ha* on© child. He was an assistant in a general practice at Colchester. Ho has acted as inspector of the diseases of animals for three years in the Police Division of Kenilworih and Southam, Warwickshire.
Mr Dayus was in private practice on his own account. He held appointments under tho Ministry of Agriculture and the County Council of Shropshire. His family have been veterinary surgeons for three generations. Before leaving England, Mr Gill was married at the Parish Church, Blandford. to Miss Sybil Doreen Cherry, younger daughter of Mr Alfred Cherry, who is the youngest son of the la to Mr John Cherry (a former resident of the village of Marston St. Lawrence). By the time Mr and Mr* (-ill arrive in New Zealand —they left fiom Liverpool towards the cud of September bv tho Ri mu taka—they will be met here hy Mr and Mrs A. Clicrrv. who sailed for New Zealand by the* Taiuui. Mr and Mrs Olicrry have a son, Mr H. H. Cherry, who is farming at Carterton.
