PREPARING FOR PLAY SENIOR CLUBS DISCOVERING THEIR STRENGTH. LEAGUE MATCHES COMMENCE. , The official opening of the Boys* Institute Cricket Club took place on Saturday afternoon in fine weather at Newtown Park, the function bein£ attended by about 300 players, comprising 28 teams, which took part in trial games. The club's president, Mr G. A. Troup, declared the season to be officially open, in a short speech, in which he outlined the growth of the club. In 1908 there were in all a mere ten teams, whereas today twentyeight teams were able to be mustered to defend the club's honour on the cricket field. ACTIVE SEASON EXPECTED. The coming season is to be an active one, judging by the numbeT of elevens entered, there being five competing in the Cricket Association*s competition, twelve in the Boys' Cricket League championships, and eleven for the Moorehouse park contained a large assemblage of parents and old boys, the opening of the 1923-24 season being an undoubted success in every way. WITH THE SENIORS. The Wellington Club had a scratchy match at Kelburn Park. Hiddleston captured the first wicket by clean bowling Williams, a new arrival from Australia. Johnson (a junior), who captained Bt. Patrick's College Rugby first fifteen during the winter, has joined up with, the Wellington Club, and he bowled very well. Foote (recently of Y.M.C.A.) is now on the Wellington Club's roll of seniors, and he batted forcibly. On Anderson Park. Thomdon and Midland played scratch games. Neither team was at full strength. The best batting performance was that of Carruthers (Thorndon), who made a lively 36. including three sixes and two fours. LEACUECAMES FIRMS MEET IN CONTEST. Inglis Bros. v. Defence.—Defence compiled 103 in their first essay (Page 81, Shepherd 21, Sage 14 and Ayling 14). Inglis Bros, responded with 95 (Hobson 20, Denton 18 and Daily 15). Bryant and M®y v. Storemen No. I. Bryant and May batted first and compiled 38: Storemen replied with 90. D.I.C. v. Kirkcaldie and Stains.—Kirkcaldie and Stains batted first and declared with 144 runs for eight wickets (Harnett 70 not out, Wilson 34); Cookson took four wickets, for 35 runs. D.I.C. were all out for 49 (Foster 27). Plant captured seven wickets for 14 runs (four wickets with four successive bails), and Candy two for 6. Tramways v. Hannah and Co.—Tramways, in their first innings made 70 (Dind j 18, Yeats 14 and Smith 10). Hannah and Co- responded with 91.

BOYS’ LEAGUE OPENING GAMES PLAYED. The opening matches in connection, with the Y.M.O.A. Boys' League took place at Kelburn and Anderson Parks on Saturday morning. ~ Twelve teams competed in junior and intermediate grades. The weather conditions were Ideal, and the cricket form shown was of a high order. Results were as follow: INTERMEDIATE. St. Cuthbert’s—First innings, 36; second innings, 30. Total, 66. Hataitai—First innings, 17; second innings, 26. Total, 43. St. Cuthbert’s won by 23 runs-—three-point win. v. College A—First innings, 64 (Rex 25, Maodonald 15, Bolt 10). Scots College—First innings, 43 (L. Watt 10); second innings, 59 for five wickets (Currie 22). College A won by 21 runs on the first innings—two-point win. Secondary—First innings, 45 (Cox 15, Clouston 15). * College B—First innings, 62 (Sandman 10). College B won by 17 runs on the first innings—two point win. JUNIOR GRADE. Clyde Quay—First innings, 55 (Barclay 15, McCourtie ’12); second innings, 66 for nine wickets (Pengelly 30, Barclay 12). Terrace—First innings, 33 (Reid 19); second innings, 25 (Reid 12). Clyde Qfuay won by 22 runs on the first innings—two-point win. Northland—First innings, 15; second innings, 92 (Burgess 57, Hurdle 11). \ Total, 107.
