TAXI LICENSES
CASES BEFORE COMMITTEE. PROBATIONARY PERMITS. At its meeting yesterday a number of taxi-driveis waited upon the bylaws committee of the City Council to plead for the issue of licenses. These were men whom the police had refused to recommend for licenses, which course is adopted once a taxi-driver makes an appearance in court for a particular infringement of the law". , It is the practice to hear these men, end where the merits of the case justify it, to issue weeklv permits to them. These, after a given period has passed by with a favourable report on the man, are converted into the customary annual license. A number of such licenses were issued yesterday.
