Cable Association (Received October 12, 10.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 11. Papyrus startlingly surprised those whotwo days ago prophesised he would prove a poor opponent for Zev. At to-day’s workout he covered a mile and a furlong in lmin 54 4-seec, without being extended, and pulled up full of running. He gave his stable mate. Bar Gold, a lead of half a furlong, and, breaking from the standard position, picked ug> his opponent before half a mile had been covered, passing him as if standing still. This workout was so impressive that it is considered possible that if the horse maintains his showing during the coming weak he will enter the raoe favourite. Zev, whose condition is splendid, is also showing great speed. Yesterday he ooverod a mile and a quarter in 2min 6 2-seoo. Papyrus was somewhat sore after his workout to-day, and a very slight lameness was noted in Ha right fore ankle, Indioating that the hard dirt track, where the race will be I eld, is having an adverse affect on the horse. Jarvis, his trainer, while plainly worried over his oonditon, is hopeful that Papyrus will quickly reoover and come to the poet at Zev covered a mile and a furlong in lmin 52 3-ssec.
