The death has taken place, after painful illness, of Mr James Matthew,’ a well-known and respected resident of Ballanco. , A native of Aberdeenshire, he left his native land for New Zealand in 1912. He had an expert knowledge of stock, and became a very• popular settler. With the exception of a year, which he spent in the Man-’ awatu. he lived the whole time at Reliance.

Tho funeral of the late Mr Alphonras Lodge, who died as the result of a. bathing accident at Day’s Bay nn Thursday, took place from 315, The Terrace, yesterday morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Mary of the Angels’ Church, Bouloott street, by the Rev. Father Murphy, and was largely attended, those present including the whole of the members of the 15th Battery, New Zealand Artillery, under Captain Abel (in which deceased was a sergeant), representatives of the Education Department, where deceased had been employed, representatives of the Community Club, Buckle street, where deceased was a zealous worker, and members of the Alarist Bros.’ Old Boys’ Association. The chief mourners were deceased’s two aunts, Airs J. Paterson and Airs J. Corich. Alemhers of the 15th Battery acted as pall-bearers, and tho cortege was headed along Willie street and Lambton quay by the whole battery. The service at the graveside at Karori cemetery was conducted by the Rev. Father Ainsworth. The 15th Battery supplied the firing party (under Lieutenant Carty), and the “Last Post” was sounded. Among those present at the church and at the gravesido were Air J. P. Firth, C.AI.G. (president of the Community Club), exCommissioner O’Donovan, Captain W. G. Stevens, Adjutant loth Battery, and Captain Williams. Special wreaths sent included those from the Education Department, officers and N.C.O.’s oL the 15th Batterv, and the Community Club.
