A SAD FATALITY

DIVER’S SPINE INJURED. DANGER AT LOW WATER. An inquest concerning the death of Adolphous Lodge, aged 20 years, who was admitted to the hospital suffering from injuries to his spine on February Ist, and died at 8 p.m. on February 2nd, was heard before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., on Saturday morning. Doctor Baird said the deceased waa admitted to the hospital at 1 p.m. on February Ist, suffering from a fractured dislocation of his neck. He gradually got worse, and died at 8 p.m. on February 2nd. Margaret Evelyn Coogan said she was at Day’s Bay on February Ist. she was called into the pavilion at about 10.30 a.m., and there saw deceased in a semi-conscious condition. Dr. Fell was called, and he ordered his removal to the Wellington Hospital. Witness added that it seemed a pity that where there were so many thousands of people congregating first aid outfits were not in evidence. In this particular case nothing more could have been done for the unfortunate young man. The finding of the court was that the deceased died of a fractured spine.

The magistrate added that some notice warning the people not to dive into the water at low tide should he Sergeant Whitehouse said he would forward the coroner’s recommendation to his snneriors, who would in turn forward it on to the Eastbourne Borough Council.
