A HANDSOME TROPHY

IN MEMORY OF JOHN SANDERSON. FOR ROYAL LIFE SAVING SOCIETY. Mr G. S. Hill, chairman of the Royal Life Saving Society, was presented yesterday with a large ootid silver cup of the value of fifty guineas by Mr Griffiths of the Paekakariki Life Saving Club, for an annual life saving competition at that place. The trophy has been donated by tho residents of Paekakariki as a tribute to the memory of tha late John Sanderson, who was a member of the above club and who was drowned there in November, 1921. The deceased was in the service of the Railway Department, and was very popular. He was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s silver medal and certificate for bravery in 1912. He also held the bronze medallion of the Royal Life Saving Society, and was honorary instructor and examiner of that institution. The cup is surmounted by a working model of a life saving reel, and was manufactured by Messrs Clark and Morris, of Willis Street, where it is now on view, and attracting attention. The first competition will take place at Paekakariki on the 11th instant, when some nine life saving teams, each of seven men. will take part. Mr Ken Kennedy, of Paekakariki, also attended and presented On his own behalf a silver cup for a reel marching contest. He and Mr Griffith were thanked by the chairman and Messrs R. W. Smith and J. A. Duffy, members of the executive, for the handsome trophies.
