BOWLING

WHY NOT A COLTS’ MATCH. PROMISING YOUNG PLAYERS. Jimmy Brackeiiridge paid a visit, with his brother, to the Victoria bowling green on Wednesday afternoon, and had the plea.sure of defeating President William Alack and his mate. Brackenridge was for many years a member of Victoria Club, and was then largely responsible lor the competition successes of that dub, as he was always keen on taking young players in hand and helping them along. There wore many Victorians who were pleased to see their old clubmate again on their green. How is that howl-testing getting along? Bowling has been taken up with added r.est this year, and while the tests have hoen proceeding a good deal of valuable information has been obtained, to say nothing of a few surprises that have been Uie outcome of them. The annual tournament on the Lyall Bay green, usually held on Anniversary Day, but postponed on account of the bad weather, will probably start to-day nnd finish next Saturday. The green is in fine condition again after the muchwanted rain, and there is hardly a ground that is not the better for it. In the colour competitions in which ihe Lyall Bay Club was engaged last Saturday they succeeded in winning them all, and the players are showing great form just now. They have some young players who are coming on wonderfully well, and in a season or so the club should te in a very strong position a« regards good bowlers. The club's representatives did not do any too well in the Dominion tournament at Auckland, although they bad a real good time. In their opinion the Wellington greens are faster than the Auckland greens, but the Auckland players, well, some of them are pretty "hot stuff." Brighting is one of the old stagers of the Lyall Bay Club, and with Bradley, is going strong in the club’s competition, which is to decide who shall represent the club in the champion of champions competition which takes place at the Wellington green on February 21st. This is the centre competition, the singles taking place on the 21st, the pairs oh the 28th, and the rinks on March 7th. Bach club is finding its champions in its own way, but most are running special competitions for this purpose. Bradley, above referred to, i© a youngster of considerable promise, and will bo in the game till the final stages ore reached. He skipped the junior pennants last year and went through without a loss, and then went to Petone and won the stars, a record which 'has not been equalled by any other club, for it is an unbeaten record.

It will require serious consideration on the part of the centre before it decides to continue the colour competitions for another year, and it will be a matter of great surprise if the competition is brought to a close this season. It is certainly not giving all round satisfaction, for there are many games yet which have been postponed, and are not likely to be brought off yet awhile. Certain clubs have centred their efforts on certain colours, and this has resulted in 6ome of the strongest teams not meeting, for player© may not take part in more than one colour. It is thought by some that a return to the old pennant match*?* would be far better than” the present colour competitions, and would give back that all-round keenness that existed under the old order of things. Some of the players or teams don't seem to worry very much whether they play in the cofours or not. Although there are plenty--if not too many—competitions already, would not a colts match giv© considerable impetus to the game, and incidentally find out where the voung talent is? It would be of gretit value to the clu-tis in giving some indication where the players of ihe future are coming from. Each club might find its own colt champion, and the centre might then run a special competition, which would be bound to 'gef plenty of support. Is not the idea worth a little consideration? A match, in which considerable interest is shown, is that which will be played next week between members of the Commercial Club and the Wellington Central Club. It will be on the Wellington Club's green. The Duthie Cup is also being played at Wanganui next week, and rinks will “be sroing up from Lower Hutt and Wellington • . That hardy annual, th© "foot on tK« mat" rule, looks like becoming a hardy monthly, fo it comeß up again at the meeting of the centre on Tuesday, on a letter from Auckland. Yeteorae of them say they will have iv>ne of it, -do what they may. Representatives of the Marlborough Bowling Centro leave Blenheim on Thuisday, the 15th. arriving in Wellington the same evening. Wanganui players will be here on March 14th and 15th, and Taranaki .wish to come on March 6th and 7th. There are some jolly times ahead for Wellington bowlers. The New South Wales team arrives in Wellington on Wednesday by the Main Trunk train, and will be tendered civic reception at the Town Hall* at 5 p.m. tho same day. On Thursday they will be taken for a drive to Trenthara, where they will take lunch, and in the afternoon will be the guests of the Hutt Valley clubs. They will be entertained at Wellington Club on Friday and Victoria Club on Saturday. " The centre will have a busy evening for they have to arrange a visit to Wairarapa, and decide what is to be done about, th© postponed colour games.
