PREPARATIONS WELL IN HAND

A BRILLIANT PROGRAMME. Progress made in connection with the forthcoming carnival at Eastbourne indicates a most successful and enjoyable time for yi si tors to Eastbourne, during the carnival. A word in season as to the purposes, for . which the funds raised will be .used,, may, perhaps be of interest. The first call upon the funds will be a substantial donation to the 1 Plunket Society, and after that- the sporting faculties are to be improved, and aiponggt the improvements will be the erection of a gymnasium and improvements to the recreation grounds and other portions of the borough. The opening ceremony will take place at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, January 27th, and the Right Hon. the Prime Minister has kindly consented to perform this ceremony. It is hoped that he will be supported by Mrs Massey and Miss Massey, and the member for the district, the Hon. T. M. Wilford, M.P. Following the opening ceremony, which is to be preceded by a pageant and procession arranged by the Plunket Society, will be the baby show ? crawling and toddling races, and the judging of decorated vehicles, ~ motors, tricycles, and prams. In, the evening, cabaret dancing will be indulged in, and at 8 p.m. a battle of flowery will commence, which will include a carnival procession, balloons, squeakers, masks, decorated hats. A vaudeville entertainment of a standard which is rarely seen under canvas is to be staged at various intervals during the day and evening. The huge marquee is in course of erection, and special provisions are being made for the lighting of same. For those who require a somewhat more thrilling entertainment, a buckjumping entertainment has been provided, and for the youngsters ponies will be for hire on the beach. Further, there will be the usual round of games and entertainments, which will inolude the good old-fashioned, yet ever-welcome peatimes, such as striker, hoop-la, peg-la, laughing gallery, an alligator of enormous dimensions, and the famous Tasmanian fat lady, who is known as Baby Linda.

On Monday, which.baa been devoted to thq children, picnic sports will be run and prizes will be given by the committee for these events, in addition to the above-mentioned side-shows and games. Tuesday’s programme is in the capable hands of the Scottish Society, whose programme of competitive events will ensure some very pretty dancing to delight visitors on this. day. Wednesday will be devoted to the Eastbourne Rugby Football Club’s programme, and competitive gymnastic events will be the order of the day. Special programmes will be printed for these events, and will be obtainable on the ground. Thursday’s programme is not sa yet complete, But something ambitious is to be presented in the way of aquatio sporte. Friday will be devoted to the juvenile amateur sports, and for these events the district has been out into six separate blocks, from which competitive trial sports will be run, and the winners of thfiee events will represent their respective blooks for the finals, Which will be run on Saturday morning, February 3rd. The afternoon of Saturday, the 3rd, will be devoted to an athletic meeting of considerable importance, in which no less than seventeen events will he decided. The meeting is being held under N.Z.A.A.A. rules, and is being managed by a strong committee under Mr\ J. W. Heenan. /

Other attractions will eventnato from time to time during the currency of the carnival, and, taking everything into consideration, Eastbourne can safely claim the honour of putting on the biggest carnival thift has yet been held in New Zealand.
