MORE SETTLERS
OPENING-UP SQUATTER LANK. NEW SOUTH WALES PROPOSAL. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright (Received January 10, 10.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Januaiy 10. The State Government land proposals have been formulated. It is estimated that 34,000,000 acre* of good land near railway lines is available, whioh will accommodate 25,000 more settlers. Of this area, 2,500,000 acres is already open for settlement. It is proposed to resume the baTanco after a- reasonable period has been allowed the present owners to voluntarily divide the land with the help of funds supplied by a rural bank. The alternative to voluntary surrender will be higher taxation of large estates or, finally, compulsory resumption. The proposals include a considerable extension of the existing irrigation areas, and the providing of a large number of more holdings for prospective settlers.
