Writing under date December 16th, the Auckland “Herald’s” Suva correspondent stated: —The steamer Chenab will arrive here on Thursday next, and she will bring some 380 Indians from India. Some of these have only been to India for a trip, and others are coming either to friends or on their own account. The vessel will, however, take away from Fiji some 1000 souls. These people come from all over the colony, and most of them are taking away a great deal more money than they brought with them. So far about 600 men and women have arrived at the depot, and these people have altogether placed in the savings bank over £17,000 in cash, besides a considerable quantity of jewellery. The position is not very clearly shown by the above figures, and people might be misled as to the actual condition. Briefly, there are over 15,000 Indians, whose passages the Fiji Government is bound to pay to India. If, however, these Indians decide not to go, the colony gains. Out of the 15,000 only about 1500 wish to go.
