SATURDAY’S PLAY.' Last Saturday's ' game© on Association ; Park brought the competition games appreciably nearer the end, and, with such weather aa was experienced during the week, people's minds, are centred more ; on tennis, cricket, croquet* and other summer pastimes. . ~ . Still, the Watersiders will keep their spectators with them to the end* and they had their -usual crowd of barrackers when they met the' Marist team. What is more, Marist gave them a good tun for their money, and it was only the wharfias' very solid defence that prevented a draw. In the first half the going was rather ragged, the-y 1 being nothing to choose Jietween them, and the high cross-wind spoiled the play. At half-time the score-sheet Was clean* tue one goal scored by the wharfiee being given off-sidel ■ . . In the second half the Watersiders pressed matters and opened with » fine gjoal through Anton at centre ior ward. On the second ground and Diamonds met, and for onoo the Thistle knew what it was to be mainly on the defensive. . Diamonds had two or three juniors playing with them, and one, Bolt, playing at right half, was evidently deputed to watch Halley. He did this with good purpose, and the defence put up by the Diamond backs and ; the alertness of the goalie resulted" in Thistle failing to store. It was left to Diamonds to set the /pace, and this they did nght willingly. Practically all the wav they had the -best of the exchanges, and/ when Taylor, fouled Kinnear in the penalty area, Hearne had Ewing guessing with a. penalty kick, low, and in the comer ot the goal. , , Changing over with the lead. Diamonds continued to push niabtera, even against the wind, and after •20 minutes play Bidgood scored a fine" goal, dashing in to take a" beautiful right wing_ centre. About ten minutes from the end Kinnear put on the third goal, leaving Thistle hopelessly in the rear; . _ Campbell" was well 'watched, and was hardly ever dangerous. Tho Diamond goalie behaved weß, and they fully deeerved their "victory. Only Watersiders and Diamonds have beaten Thistle . this season, and Hospital has the honour of being the only team to defeat Watersiders, who wouild otherwise have probably finished with on unbeaten record.Y.M. “B ” HAVE A WIN BEAT WEAKENED HOSPITAL TEAM. The first Girls' soccer match ever played at Masterton toot place on Saturday afternoon, when Aotea (Wellington) met Masterton. The weather was tine: The Masterton team had only_had a week or so at practice, but nevertheless made a very creditable showing against their much more experienced and clever opponents. The reams were as follow: Masterton—Goal, Miss I. Dodds; backs, Misses M. Coe, A. Doody, EL Jenkins, A. Ball. F. Winzenberg; forwards, Misses B. Finlayson, J. Jackson, B. Pauling, A. McCullough, J. Jenkins. Aotea —Goal, Miss J. Green; hacks, Misses M. Rowell, El. Sullivan, McDonald, I. Sutherland, Q. Sterling; forwards, L. Landymore, Q. Sterling; forwards, L. W. Nickless, D. Sullivan. Aotea started off briskly, opening up with a brilliant attack, in which Misses Sawkins, G. Landymore, D. Sullivan, and Niokless were prominent. Misses Pinlayson and Pauling were, however, responsible for removing play to the Wellington team’s territory, where solid defence by Misses Rowell and E. Sullivan prevented a score. Some capital passing between Misses G. Landymore, L. Landymore, Sterling, Nicklcss, and D. Sullivan saw the visitors attack, and faulty shooting lost an almost certain goal. Aotea kept up the pressure, and from a corner the Masterton goal was endangered. The home team eventually cleared. Not to be denied Aotea came away again, Misses L. Landymore, McDonald, and Nickless putting in splendid work. A vigorous dash up the field by the Aotea forwards eventually res cited' in Miss L. Landymore scoring. Aotea, 1; Masterton, 0. The Mas terton team were holding their own very well, hut they lacked finish, being un able to successfully complete in an ettacking movement. Both Aotea and Mas terton had turns at attacking, but there ■Was no further, score during the spell In the second spell nlay became more vigorous, and both sides did some excellent attacking. Misses Sawkins, G. Landymore, and .Sterling ware conspicuous for some smart work for Aotea," and Misses Blnlaysbn, Pauling, J. Jackson, and A. Jackson for - Masterton.' A determined onslaught by Aotea was driven back by. Misses Coe and Doddy,.while another equally determined- effort .by the visitors found Misses 8.. Jenkins and Winzenberg equal to the', occasion. Then Misses G. Landymore, Sawkins, Nidkless, and D. SnlliVan came away, the former eventually scoring. Aotea 2 Masterton 0 The visitors attacked with vigour, and only sound -defence of the home hacks prevented a scoro. Then -Miss Nickless came through, after a. fine piece of work by the clever Aotea forwards, and scored an posy goal; ' Aotea 3 Masterton 0 Time was called shortly after without any addition to the score.
