TRADE WITH GERMANY
RELATIONS TO BE RESUMED. LEGISLATION NECESSARY. TO INCREASE CUSTOMS DUTIES. Would the Minister for Customs state the „ approximate date within which he expected that New Zealand would resume trade relations with Germany? asked Mr T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South), in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. In Australia, he stated, trade relations with Germany had been resumed for a month past. Tho Hon. W. Downie' Stewart replied that he hoped to introduce a hill shortly to enable New Zealand to impose sufficient Customs duties against countries which had currencies in the condition of the German currency) so as to give a fair preference to British goods and fair protection to our own industries, Australia had put her duties up 75 per; cent, against Germany, hut under the Act of last year we had power to put ours up to 25 per cent, only. He, therefore, wanted • measure' to give further power. He thought also that sufficient notice—say, three or six months* notice—should be given to traders of the intention to resume trade relations with Germany. Mr Sidey: The bfll will he put through this session?. Minister: I think so.
