Among , th » vrill he Hu«ker and Lady Hall, who were runners-up at Bawera a week ago. Explorer was given a let-up after the National meeting, but is in worK again- . Mr W. G, Stead left for Australia yesterday, where his horses will be racing next week. Lady Nassau is reported; to have appeared to h'e rather lame after galloping the other morning. Orchid is hitting out well on the tracks, and gallops very attractively. The Absurd colt, Thespian, cap, do with a little sharpeming-up, but should be forward enough to make the opposition gallop to catch hum the first time ho appears in public. It is not considered' likely that the crack sprinter Tamatete will he raced before December. * , . The Australian Jockey Club has granted a trainer’s license to the New Zealander H. Pritchard, and joakeys? licenses to T. Pritchard and J. T. Young. 1 ,; • An offer of £lo,ooo is said to have been refused for -Beauford - recently. BeaufoTd appears to he a very easygoing sort, for, aooording to one writer, be comes when he is called and hangs round around among the washing on the olothes line. Since he last raced Bight and! Left has been treated to a lot of Jiill work by Mr F. Weston, and has filled out splendidly. He has resumed work again; pn the tracks at Ellerslie. LUCK AT THE RINGSIDE. It is extraordinary how some men cannot' avoid good fortune (remarks a well-known writer). Mr S. B. Joel had Polvmelus forced upon, him, much to the disgust of Frank Hartigan. In 1906 Polymelus was submitted to auction, and Hartigan went to the sale with a commission to bid up to 4000 guineas for him. Mr Joel, however, hid up. to that amount, and Hartigan,' atthofigh limited to 4000 guineas, hid another hundred. Mr TattersaJl then turned to Mr Joel and addressed a few remarks to him, pointing out the engagements Polymelus held and the prospect he had of winning good races with him. The result was Mr Joel , bid 4200 guineas and became the owner of Polymelus,■ who was a few yeans later to head the winning sires? list in England and at the end of five different seasons. Mr Tattersall ‘ did not realise that he was forcing practically a quarter of a million; upon Mr Joel', as Polymelus must fiaive earned quite that sum in stud fees since he retired to the stud in 1906. Such is the luck of the game. Pplymelus gave Mr Joel .a high-class Colt in Pommem, who won him bis first classic race" when he scored in the Two Thousand Guineas and afterwords won the Derby in the easiest possible manner. He is likely to earn as much in stud fees for Mr Joel as Polymelus did, as he is now one of the most sought-after young horses in England.
