J Otaki nominations close to-day. Acceptances for the New Zealand Cup J are due. to-day. [ Word from Otaki is to the effect that the champion Amythas is on the easy list <at present. Listowel has been put into work again, and is to be a competitor at the Wellington spring* meeting. ' A Xhmedin report states that Bonnie Winkle's owner does not think that the Great Autumn winner will be forward enough to carry 8.8 in the New Zealand Cup. This makes it look as if Bonnie L Winkie should be regarded as an "unlikely starker in the biy two mile event. Crucelle is doing good work at Wanganui. but is on the big side, and may not be seen at.'her best for a while yet. The Wellington-owned Moonstruck, who is tr&ined at Otaki, is reported tq be lame. Complimentary has been galloping well on the tracks at Otaki, and is expected to race -well at coming meetings. * The following New Zealand Cup. candidates have been entered for events at Wanganui:—Urgency, Penitent, Admiral Codrington, Tenterfield, Trespass, Marqueteur, liouen, Wuraahi, Vespucci, Pluto, Lady Nassau. It is reported that the Aucklander, J. Buchanan, has successfully applied for a jockey's license, and now holds pormits < to both train and ride. The former Trentham mare Martial Dawn is one of the early fancies for the Avondale Cup, in which she is to be ridden by H. Wiggins. A. I. McFlinn 'has been engaged to lido Dancing Doll in her engagements at Ellerslie', Dancihg Doll is an imported filly, who will run in the colours of Mr E. W. Alison, junr. A meeting of one-day totalisator clubs was to have been held in Auckland yesterday, and it is likely* that as a, result representations will be made to the Government on .the subject of the present ■ very heavy taxation. No Surrender is to he shipped to Sydney by the Ulimaroa: today. The son of. Salvadan will bo ridden in the steeplechases at the A.J.C. spring meeting by Stan Rieid. After paying away in stakes .454710, and handing over to the Government ,454560 19s 9d in taxes,, the Te Aroha Jockey Club made a loss of .6544 5s on the season’s working. When U: Gray- rode Islebof Wight to victory at Liverpool, his mount started second favourite, hut was. hidden during the running, and writing of the 'occurrence bhe "Special Commissioner’* says:— "The Molyneux Stakes, contested, by only six hoTses.. provided-a fine' finish. - ; between Isle of Wight and 1 Francis Joseph. The pair were out by themselves on the stand side all the way, and must have been quite unobserved by the layers, ' who offered 10 and even 20 to 1 Isle of Wight in running. Francis Joseph made a capital effort, but failed to ppt up by a neck. • ■ “Ex-Steward” writes as .. follows:—"A mistake has crept into your sporting notes.. In Tuesday’s issue you.make the remark, that Faithful Knight; a recent steeplechase winner in Victoria (Australia) was by the great English lacehorse The White Knight, winner of the ' Ascot Gold Cup. This is Incorrect.' Faithful Knight, the steeplechase winner, was "by a Wfiito Knight, but certainly not by the English champion. The White Knight in question, was bred in Australia, I think at the Wambo Stud, Singleton, N.S.W.. and his breeding4s by Persian Kinight, who was three-quarter brother to Charlemagne (imq.), who was ( at one time standing in New Zealand. His breeding is Persimmon Perfect Dream. The-White Knight’s (Australian) ; dam was a mare called Larissa, .by Corinth. This probably accounts for 'liis jumping capabilities. ■As far as my memory serves me this animal never won a race of any importance, if indeed he won one at all, as 3 sire his fame entirelv rests on. one winner, Faithful Knight, although'l have an idea he also got an up-country winner of.’a paltry Stake some time ago.” A WRONG IMPRESSION GLOAMING’S: WORK AT HAND WICK. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. SYDNEY, August 31.Mr H. J, Mason, Mr jQqeonwood’s trainer,'discounts a number of Press reports extolling Gloaming's gallops. , He says they convey a wrong impression, as the performances have been bettered by ■: others whose names are not featured. At the same time. Gloaming is progress- ! ing satisfactorily, and he hopes the animal will be well forward a month hence.., I He expects him also to be in good trim 1 for the meeting against Beauford in the Chelmsford Stakes „ on September 9th. ] The remainder of the team is shaping 1 well, with the exception of Farceur, who is slightly lame.
