acquisition by state suggested. Mr W. H. Field (Otaki) wishes to ask the Prime Minister whether the Government will, as soon as public finances .will permit, favourably consider the question of acquiring the large area of forest still standing in the watershed of the, Hiutt river and its tributaries, except such part thereof as ie already Crown land, with'due protection to private sawmilltng end farming interests, for the purpose of (a) conserving the water supply for the future needs of the city of ■Wellington and its suburbs and the Mutt Valleyr- (b) the maintenance of normal climatic conditions and rainfall; (c) the checking of erosion of valuable alluvial land; (d) the application of scientific forestry to ouch portions of the forest as consist of millable timber; and (e) the preservation of the larger portion of this forest area as a permanent forest reserve?.. ... . ~ „
