GENERAL ELECTION

GISBORNE SEAT. A strong movement ia on foot in both town and country to approach Mr George Smith, chairman of the Harbour Board, with a view to securing his nomination as Reform candidate for the Gisborne electorate at the forthcoming elections. It is understood that- arrangements are being made for a deputation to wait on Mr Smith, and that it has the support of a comparatively iarge section of the farming community, together with representatives of the town interests. It is further understood that Mr Smith will not even consider the request, much lesß accede to it. A well-attended meeting of the Liberal Association at Gisborne decided to support the candidature of Mr George Wildish at the Genera! Ejection. Mr Wildish is a saddler, and is at present Mayor of Gisborne. THE NATIVE SEIATB. The “Kawhia Settler” has been Informed that it is the intention of the Maori prophet Ratana to nominate four candidates for the respective native constituencies. THE OTAKI ELECTORATE!. Air C. I. Harknees, of Weraroa, has stated that he will contest the Otaki seat at the coming General Election. Mr Harknees said that represantatoons had been made to him from both the Manawatu and Otaki electorates asking him to go to the ballot. After comsideration be had definitely decided t; accede to the requests made in respect to Otaki.
