(By "Carbine.”) All further attempts to train Matchlight have been abandoned, and th’o Four Chimes pacer has been acquired by Mr J. R. Corrigan for stud purposes. Old Gold was loft at Riccanton after the C.J.C. National meeting and In now an iornate of Mr W. McDonald's stable. Miss Gold is reported to have broken down badly, and is to be retired to the 6tud. Gion Canny is the only previous winner of the Avondale Cup engaged in this year’s event. The stipendiary stewards and racecourse inspectors cost the Taka puna Jockey Club just over £BO a day last season. Tiyo prospective New Zealand Cup candidates, Erie and Muraahi, figure among the acceptors for the Flying Handicap at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s meeting F. D. Jones has decided to throw Malaga out of work, and the gelding may bo fired before being taken up again. Coniston was recently purchased' by an Australian sportsman, and was shipped to Sydney last week. Though he gave a fair amount of promise last spring, the Sunny lake —Prank gelding only won one small event during his three-year-old career. According to "Templar,” all the jockeys injured during the progress of the C.J.C, National meeting are progressing favourably towards recovery. Uncle Ned is a noteworthy absentee from the nominations for the Avondais Cup, but he appears in the Plumpton Handicap to be run on the second day. The Auckland Country Racing Clubs Breeders' Association have nominated Day Comet and Arohiestown for the Manawatu Sires* Produce .Stakes. A pony by Formative—Etona, whioh is now owned by Mr W. Ryan, is to bo shipped to Sydney shortly, and will go into the charge of Mr F. McGrath (says the Auckland “Star”). Alteration is stated to have been very sore'-after competing in the C.J.C. National Hurdles, and may have to bo treated to a lengthy spell. At lest advices the loading two-year-old in England this year is a colt named Duncan Gray, a son of the Derby winner, Pommern. It is related that when Duncan Gray was sent into the ring as a yearling the reserve placed on him was only of a moderate character, but no one seemed prepared to bid the same, and the oolt was left on the hands of his brooder, Sir John Robinson. It may be inferred that it would take a good few thousands to effect the purchase of Duncan Gray at the present stage. There is every likelihood of B. S. Sievier laying another visit to Australia. In a recent letter to a Melbourne friend. Sievier stated that, in all probability, he would bring a team of racehorses to Australia in the near future. It was in the 'eighties that Sievier, under the r.ame of “Bob Sutton," introduced cash betting in Australia. Sievier has raced horses in England with varying success for years. He paid 10,000 guineas for Sceptre as a yearling, and won the One Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas, Oaks and St. Leger, and other good races with her before selling her for .£25,000. In the course of his remarks at the annual .meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club, Mr W. Gardiner regretted the want of success attending the past season’s operations. On the December meeting a loss of .£ISOO was made, but the May meeting was more ‘ successful. In order to help the . club to weather the hard times, it was decided to invite members to take up .£lO debentures up to the sum of £IOOO. The tone was far from pessimistic, as it was stated that the el ub had been in a precarious position before, but had recovered'. During the recent C.J.C. National meeting a well-known Auckland sports, man, who usually can be relied upon to have a bit the better of the argument when it comes to a matter of racing, laid another sportsman £IOO to a cigar that Wairiki had never raced further south than Christchurch. A reference to the records, however, showed that the champion son of Soult competed at the North Otago J.C. meeting of 1903, when he wpn the North Otago Handicap, prior to taking part in the sensational New Zealand Cup, when Canteen heat him in a bumping ffnish, McComb. the rider of tne former, being disqualified for two years, but the race was not taken away from Canteen. The Aucklander paid.—Auckland “Star.” The forthcoming contest for the Avondale Guineas, which is run on September 215th. the second day of the Avondale Jockey Club's spring meeting, promises to be mere than usually interesting, for. both from the numerical and class point of view the field looks like being a record one, although the final! payments aTe not duo until September Ist. writes "Whalebone.” Mr A. B. Williams is strongly represented by Epitope, which headed the list of winning two-year-olds last season, and the promising ooilt Rapine, while a couple of others trained in tlio south in Mountain Lion and Lucius are . also likely ones. The Auckland and Waikato divisions are much stronger than usual and include Quite a number of promising three-year-olds, that would only need to improve a little on their two-year-old form to give them a chance in a race of this description- Among the more noticeable are: Sheffield, Refinement, Electrode, Sundaur, Lady Lois, Ligbtwood, Ring Cheops, Far North, Florent. Tactful, Finclli, Master O'Rourke, John Dix, Shebang, Bretland, Bonny Canny, Nocturne, Bay Dighton, and Matinee, EGMONT HUNT CLUB ANNUAL MEETING POSTPONED. PES PRESS ASSOCIATION. HAWERA, August 22.
