FORGERY CHARGE
CHEQUE FOR £BOOO. JUDGE ON WAR SERVICE PLEA. PER PBESS ASSOCIATIONCHRISTCHURCH, August 22. Charles Francis Riley (28), convicted in the Supremo Court of making a falso document, thereby committing forgery in connection with a cheque for £BOOO, was brought up for sentence. Counsed for prisoner made a strong appeal for leniency on the grounds of prisoner’s war service, and the fact that prisoner was still suffering from the effects of wounds and shell-shock. Mr Justice Adams, in admitting prisoner to probation for three years, said the recommendation to mercy by the juiy must bo taken into consideration. He aloo remarked that he though* it was time, four years after the war, that the court ceased to hear about the war services of prisoners charged with serious crimes.
