FISHERMEN’S NEEDS
WHARF AT ISLAND BAY. OPPOSITION FROM RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION. On reading the statement that the City Council could not proceed with the landing wharf at Island Bay for the uao of the fishermen, Mr W. A. Smith, secretary of the Fishermen’s Association, pointed out to the “Times'* representative that an allocation of £1250 was made two years ago after the matter had been gone into by the City Council and the Government. EAST OR WEST? Originally, it was explained, the idea Was to have the landing wharf on the east ante of the hay, but the ratepayers objected on the ground that it would spoil the beauty of that side of the hay, some portion of which it was desired to retain as a recreation ground. They preferred that the wharf •bould be built on the west side, on what is known as Fishermen’s Creek. This would be suitable, said Mr Smith, hut it would involve a good deal more expense than on the east side, as there was no depth to speak of or room to manoeuvre tho boats, while there was plenty of depth on the east. The fishermen are agreeable to the wharf being on the west side, provided a landing-place is provided or dinghies on the east shore, as in stormy weather the vessels could not wharf in Fishermen’s Creek. MEETING THE RATEPAYERS. On the other hand, the Ratepayers’ Association wishes the Oity Council to make by-laws prohibiting the fishermen from using the mam beach for landing dinghies or nets. However, representatives from the Fishermen’s Association are meeting delegatee from the Ratepayers’ Association to discus. the matter further to see if any satisfactory arrangement can be come to.
