AMUSEMENT TAX
CHORAL SOCIETIES’ PROTEST. FAVOURABLE REPLY FROM MR MASSEY. Among the first business at the conference of choral societies yesterday was the consideration of the amusement tax which it was stated pressed unduly hard on the amateur societies. In this connection Mr W. E. Caldow read an answer given by the Prime Minister in the House on the matter. Mt Desmoulins (Dunedin) stated they had received a favourable reply from Mr Massey in the south. On the motion of ,Mr C. Hudson (Auckland) it was decided that a deputation wait on the Prime Minister to ask that the tax be lifted from choral societies. He pointed out that these societies worked under a great disadvantage, the tax militating against securing members, especially among tho smaller societies.
