ASSISTING THE MAORIS AN ADVISORY BOARD. The consolidation of Rugby football among the Maoris was the subject of a conference between representatives of the Maoris and members of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union on. Saturday evening. Mr G. W. Slade, chairman of the N.Z.R.U., occupied the chair, and among the Maori representatives were: The Hon. A. T. Ngata, M.P., Mr Tau Henare, M.P., Messrs W. T. Parata, T. Pavala, VV. Nikera, and S. Maioha, and members of the New Zealand Native team. During the discussion, which was of an informal nature, it was stated that the Maoris desired to remain loyal to the Rugby code, and if a proper system of organisation could be introduced the outlook for them was very promising. The meeting decided that a Maori Advisory Board be eet up to devise a scheme for the betterment of the game among the Maoris and to report to the N.Z.R.U. The following were appointed to tho Advisory Board:—Messrs "VV. T. Parata, convener (Bay of Plenty), W. J. Stead (Southland), M. Winiata (Horowhenua), A. Takarangi (Wanganui), S-. M. Tiki (Hawke's Bay), W. Nikera (Hastings), T. Carroll (Wairoa), T. French (Waikato), and S. Maioha (North Auckland), Captain Pitt (Poverty Bay), and the Rev. Pini Tamahori (East Coast Rugby Union). Prior to his departure for the north yesterday, Mr W. T. Parata informed a reporter that the board would meet in Hawke's Bay at the beginning of next month, when Bay of Plenty are to play Hawke's Bay for the Ranfurly Shield. PLAYERS TO TRAIN. With a view to forthcoming representative matches, the selectors (Messrs F. Roberts, W. J. Wallace, and A. Wilson) have chosen thirty-two players to train at the Oriental gymnasium this evening and at the Athletic gymnasium on Thursday opening at 8 o'clock. The playore are as follow: —S. K. Siddells, EL Brook, E. Christoplierson, Malfroy, A. Jackson, Mahoney, Wogan, TJdy, Trapski, J. Tunnington, Gibson (Old Boys). H. Nicholls, M. Nicholls, E. Tilyard, McHerron, E. King, Gair, Scott ('Varsity), Swain, Duncan (Athletic), Thomas ('Varsity), J. Shearer, Pringle, S. Shearer, W. Ryan, Mcßae ('Varsity), Troy, Thomas (Petone), Calcinai, Moffitt, Hopkins, and Standen. OTAKI RETAINS THE CUP ■For the third time in succession the Otaki Club has been successful in winning the Licensed Victuallers’ Cup. On Saturday last they met the Te Horo team, and the hardest contest for the trophy took place. The visitors comprised several promising players, gave a fine exhibition, and from the start it was seen the match was to be a hardfought one. Immediately from the Uckoff Otaki made a breach, and Morgan had a t shot at goal from an easy angle, but missed. Play continued interesting, and Pqti caused the hopes of Te Horoites to again rise considerably by making a fine run. He outpaced his opponents and scored a well-earned try. Morgan failed' at goal. Play hovered about midfield for some time., Eventually a free kick was awarded Otaki, and Snbritsky kicked a neat goal. 3—3. From this play favoured Te Horo, and Lima on being pressed speculated, missed badly, and allowed Marino to secure the ball and score. Morgan failed to convert. 6—3. The spell ended. The second half was a well-contested one, and the visitors played splendidly, showing dash throughout. The Otaki team played stubbornly, and were rewarded early in the spell by Ferguson securing the ball. This player dashed up the field for nearly twenty-five yards and scored. Subritz6ky failed to convert. 6—6. Play continued interesting, and it was only by solid work that Otaki prevented Te Horo from again scoring. No further score was registered, and hence Otaki retained the cup. Mr J. Haydon was referee. During the game there were several minor accidents, while one player was cautioned for rough play. , Next Saturday Paraparaumu and Otaki will play for the cup, and a keen interest Is already being 6hown. The Golden Bay representative team are due at Otaki shortly, and arrangements are being made to improve the ground by rolling, etc. During the visitors’ stay in Otaki they will be entertained.
