REDUCING WAGES

Clynes, in his presidential address at the annual conference of the General Workers’ Federation at Leamington, forecasted that the employers’ inconsiderate use of power in enforcing wage reductions would rouse a desire for retaliation. The wage increase was gradual during the war, but thef suddfen reductions in the case of six million workers now amounted to about £10,000,000 weekly. The conference passed a resolution calling on tho Government to restrain employers from unfairly depressing wages.
