Tl.-c Admiralty has a statement den via*; the report that Japan is ovading*the* yaval treaty by increasing the eoi-SLruetion of auxiliary vessel*. Japan intends U> build only tour cruisers of 10,tX>) ton* each, four ot TWO tons each, f.vcntv-four doetroyers of an aggregate t0n 21. -.go of 33,0 K) tons, and t : .vonty-four submarines of an aggregate tonnage of 23,100. Ibis represents a reluct ion of 13,935 grees tonnage on the original 1921 programme. Ttvelve thousand naval officers will be dropped, and it is announced that Port Arthur will bo abandoned as a naval port. The Now York ‘ Times" Washington correspondent recently reported that the latent official Naval Intelligence Department’s survey of the increase to the naval programme of the five Powers signatory to the A\ ash:ngton naval treaty showed that Japan had building, and projected, more ships of the unrestricted tvpes than env other Power. The types were: First-line light cruisers, destroyer leaders, first-line destroyers, first-line submarines, and fleet submarines. . . Britain, added the correspondent, is building of these, respectively, none of the first typo, one of .1700 tons in tho eecond tvpe, three of 3<25 tons in the third type, four of 5800 tons in the fourth type, and none of the Jifth typo. United States has ten of 75,000 tons of the fir*: tvre, none of the second, three of 3645* tons in the third type, thirty-six of 31.561 tons in the fourth, and three of 6375 in the fifth. Japan has fifteen of 81.000 tons in the first, none of the eecond, fifty ot 68,500 tons in the third, twenty-three «*f 30.304 tons in the fourth fiftv-two ©f unknown tonnage in the fifth. France has three of 24.000 tons in the first, si* of 14,400 tons in the second, twelve of 10.300 tons in th© third, twelve of 13.200 tons in the fourth, and none of the fifth. Italy has two of 16.000 tons in the first, si* of 12.270 in the second, twelve of I'I.CSO in the third, four of 2600 in the fourth, and none in the fifth.
