TERRESTRIAL MAGNETISM

ARRIVAL OF DR. L. A. BAUER. CONFERENCES IN DOMINION. Dr. L. A. Bauer, Director of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution, Washington, which sent tho magnetic boat to the Dominion a few months ago, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the s.s. Ma. ivuka, from Sydney. The institute which he represents runs quite a number of observatories about the world and contributes equally with the Government to the maintenance of the Samoan observatory. He was. met by Professor E. Marsden, chairman of the Professorial Board of Victoria College and also the Ob. servatory Advisory Board, and Dr. C. E. Adams, 'Government Astronomer. Dr. Bauer is visiting New Zealand to confer with the Samoan Advisory Board, which meets this morning, and also to consult with the Director-Gen-eral of Survey, (Mr W. T. Neale, with regard to the magnetic observatory at Christchurch. He will be speaking tomorrow evening to the Wellington Philosophical Society on “Geophysics,” and 'he leaves Wellington for Samoa on Thursday. He has just come from the International Geophysical Conference at Rome, at which all Government astronomers and heads of observatories in Australia were present. At this conference a special resolution was passed congratulating New Zealand upon having taken up so efficiently the work of the Samoan Observatory.
