HOME AND HOME MATCHES. NGAIO v. WORKING MEN'S CLUB. The first of thin year’s “home erf home’* matches between the above clube was played at the Workii% Men's Ciub'e cheesroom on Saturday evening, when the visitors scored a handsome win. The game at Board 2 stands adjourned, in favour of the Ngaio player, who has won t-hq exchange, and has a dangerous passed pawn, lie score of the match Was follows:
-Adjourned, in favour of Mr Jones, as mentioned above. WELLINGTON CHESS LEAGUE. The above match also counted for • heat in the local league’s contest, Ngato scoring a win in the senior division* (Boards 1 to 6, inclusive), and also in! the junior division (Boards 7 to 12, in. elusive). This contest concluded the second round of the league fixtures. The drawings for tbe third round are as follow:—On Tuesday next, 4th instant t Weh lington A v. Wellington South (seaias and junior), at the Newtown Pthjifl Library; and Wellington Bv. Ngaio, *8 Ngaio (senior and junior). The Work, ing Men’s Club has the bye. The Wellington Chess Club will thus have 9* players -travelling to-morrow {Tnesriexh which is a unique experience for tn? club. THE WELLINGTON CLUB. The Wellington Chess Club was forty, six years old last Saturday, having been* founded on July Ist, 1876, as the result of a verysuccessful match, “Town v. Civil Service,'* which ended, after sa «*• citing finish, as follows;—Town. 24 wins. Civil Service, 23- Drawn, 3. The canvass for membership was very effectively* carried out by Mr W. F. Barraud (the only foundation member on the club's roll) and the late Mr Edward Beeves, who died at Island Bay a few years ago. The chib’s first match was against a very strong Parliamentary team, which included the Hone. John Ballance and John Bryce (both of Wanganui). Dr Greenwood (Nelson), and Messrs W. L. Rees and H. H. Lusk (both of Auckland). This contest lasted several evenings, and finally ended in a win for the Partin, mentarians by a small margin. It is not generallT known that there was am earlier Wellington Chess Club—founded in 1866 bv Mr C. P. Powles—who m stilt a resident of this city. Mr Montagu* Mosley, of Roseneath. was aleo a member of the pioneer Wellington Chess Club, which appears to have become defunct UX the early 'seventies.
