It is stipulated that the amount Bhall he applied to the unemployed funds, and spent in increasing playing areas at Ivilbirnie, Lyall Bay, or Prince of Wales Park. AT THE COUNCIL MEETING. THE DONORS THANKED. Referring to tlio question of unemployment relief at last evening’s meeting of the City Council, the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.) stated that two or three gangs of merf* were being put on to the construction of the new road to Khandallah to blaze a way for the work which was to follow. He hoped that the council would be ’ able to put more men on shortly, and so relieve the unemployment problem. The widening of the Evans Bay road was also under consideration, but nothing definite had yet been formulated. Councillor C. H. Chapman pointed out that the Wellington Racing Club had made an offer of one-third of the profits of the next three-days’ meeting towards the unemployment relief fund, and suggested to the Mayor that he should encourage other bodies to make similar offers.

The Mayor said that tho Racing Club deserved every credit. He understood that tho fund would benefit to the extent of at least £759 —probably more. The gift was a very generous one, and would bo very acceptable. Ho agreed that if other bodies could he induced to make donations towards the unemployment funds a substantial amount would be realised. Mr Wright also referred to the donation of £9O made by the Wellington Rugby Union. The council passed a special resolution thanking the Racing Club and the Rugby Union for their generosity.
