LAND DEVELOPMENT

N.S.W. INQUIRY IMPORTANT CONFERENCE HELD IN SYDNEY. A POLICY WANTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received June 28, 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 27. The Premier, Minister for Lands and Sir Joseph Carruthers conferred on the Government's policy of land development as it affects private estates with representatives of the graziers, .shires and stock owners’ associations, the Million Farms Club, Primary Producers’ Union, Chamber of Commerce and leading banks. Sir George Fuller, in opening the conference, said he would not discuss whether private lands should be put to better- use or whether Crown lands or private lands should be dealt with first. The alternatives were voluntary subdivision and compulsory subdivision. The Government would prefer to help tho owners of land to subdivide rather than resort to compulsion, but Cabinet would be-firm as a rock in doing something to get men settled on the land. It would not allow selfish private interests to stand in the way of the public good. The conference proceeded to discuss proposals in an endeavour to present a satisfactory scheme to the Government.
