DETAINED AT ’FRISCO
WELLINGTONIAN’S PLIGHT U.S.A. IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES’ ACTION. MR HOWARD NATTRASS HELD UP News by the latest American mail report* that Air Howard Nattrass, of Wellington, who loft Wellington on May 9th by the n.jl.S. Marama, on a business visit to the United States, was detained at San Erancisco, together with .Miss Uaith K. Strangman, also of Wellington, by the immigration authorities, pending an inquiry. Private information has come to hand to the effect that, after Air Nattrass had been in cable communication with Wellington, both ho and Alias Strangman were [subsequently permitted to proceed oil to New York. The “San Francisco Chronicle ’ of May 31 ?t gave the following account of the affair: Miss Edith K. Strangman, a pretty New Zealander, and Howard Nattras®, a wealthy automobile dealer, of Wellington, New Zealand, spent Memorial Day in an enforced sojourn on Angel Island yesterday, pending the investigation of their status to be roado by a special board of inquiry. Miss Strangman was detained by immigration authorities on Monday, when friends whom she had expected to meet her here failed to appear. According to Nattrase, the inquiry is based on the fact that the girl came to America on the same vessel with him, and that she is engaged to marry him as soon a® he can be divorced from the wife from whom he has separated. Both are plentifully supplied with money. “There has been no wrong committed.’’ says Nattrnss, “and I shall prove that to the immigration authorities.*’
