HOROWHENUA UNION THE SHANNON AFFAIR. LIFE DISQUALIFICATIONS IMPOSED (Special to "N.Z. Times/*) LEVIN, June 28. At a meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union at Levin, L. jiut’kman, It. McDonald, and J. Young, the men concerned in tho recent assault on a referee (Mr Cla ridge) at Shannon, were disqualified for life. The* union decided to take the appoint* ment of referees into its own hands, it being- alleged that the Referees’ Association had discriminated against a referee whom the union had appointed to act at Shannon, contrary to the Referees’ Association’s instructions. In connection with the recent affair at Otaki, when A. Bevan and J. Hakaraia were ordered off the field, and R. Webby afterwards left the ground, there was a deal of discussion. Bevan attended, and in speaking on his own behalf said iiakaraia was excited, and that he (.Bevan) only acted in self-defence. The explanation was accepted and the suspension lifted. Hakaraia and Webby are to bo asked to explain their conduct at the next meeting of the union.
