AUSTRALIA BEATS TARANAKI. GAME FULL OF INTEREST. PKR PRESS ASSOCIATION. NEIW PLYMOUTH, June 28. Good weather conditions prevailed for the big “Soccer" match, Australia versus Taranaki, to-day, which was won by Australia by six goals to one. The spectators, estimated at 4009, watched the game, which, though one-sided, was full of interest The visitors’ clever footwork, pretty headwork, and good combination generally delighted them. Taranaki gave a good display, considering that is only in its infancy in tih© province, but lacked the Australians* science and finer knowledge of the game. The shooting at goal was weak, though, the Australians’ shooting was also erratic at times. The Australians did not have their strongest team in the field. THE PLAY. J. Gumberford, receiving a pass, drew first blood for Australia by badly beating Taranaki's goalie. Spurred fay the reverse, Taranaki brought play to a good attacking position, but made little use of a free kick in front of Australia's goal. Back came the visitors, Brown, who an outstanding game at centre forward, taking a centring shot and finding the net with a brilliant shot The next was obtained by Dane, who sent in a low 6hot which glancod off the goalkeeper foot into the net Play moved ur> and down the field, but Australia could not be kept out. A combined forward movement ended in Brown shooting another goal. At halftime the scores were:— Australia 4 Taranaki 0 LOCAL TEAM IMPROVES. Taranaki played bettor in tho second half, and halfway through the spell Brown shot his third goal. Then Taranaki rallied. Fitzgerald dribbling the ball through before passing to Woodham, who centred to Freakley, and tho latter sent in a hot shot fair into the net. Taranaki’s effort was loudly applauded. Taranaki continued to hold the visitors for a time. Australia, however, swept down again, and Brown headed the ball into the net after it had hit the bar and bounced back. The gam e end e d : Australia 6 Tarahaki 1 The star players for Australia were Brown, Thompson, Cumberford Brothers, and Dane, while on the Taranaki side the outstanding players were Jones, Worthington, Howarth, and Woodham. A dinner in honour of the visitors is being held to-night, and they leave for Auckland to-morrow morning.
