SOUTH-WESTERLY GALE

SHIPPING DELATED. ROUGH SEAS IN HARBOUR. Tlie smaller coastal steamers plying about Cook Strait have been seriously' delayed by the south-westerly gale which has been raging during the past couple of days. The Kapitd, which left Wanganui at 8.50 o’clock on Monday night for Wellington, had not put in an appearance up till an early hour this morning. The Hawera and Waverley, which sailed from Patea about 10.30 o’clock on Monday night for Wellington, had not arrived at 1.30 o’clock this morning. Tho three boats are expected to bo sheltering on the coast. Vessels detained at Wellington yesterday by tho had weather comprised the Komata, for Westport- Kaikorai, for Newcastle; Karon, for Greymouth; Tutanekai, for South Island lighthouses; Wootton and Breeze, for Lyttelton ; Baden Powell, for New Plymouth; and Echo, for Blenheim. The south-westerly gale during the past two days raised a considerable sea on the eastern side of the lower harbour and rendered it a difficult matter for the Duchess to berth on -trend ay afternoon and evening, and yesterday at Rona Bay wharf. On Monday night the vessel was unable to get alongside tho Rona Bay wharf, calling only at Day’s Bay. A party of twenty visitors from the city who took part in an entertainment at Bona Bay did not grasp the situation, and were marooned at Rona Bay. Eventually motor-cars had to be sent from town to bring the party hack to tho city. MAORI BUFFETED. PORTS BROKEN AND CABINS FLOODED. A Press Association message from Christchurch reports that the ferry steamer Maori had an exceedingly rough passage from Wellington. She was not berthed at Lyttelton until 9.40 a.m. yesterday, more than two hours and a half behind her usual time. Some of the ports were broken by the farce of tho seas, and several cabins were flooded.
