SOLDIER UNEMPLOYMENT

WORK FOR THE WINTER. URGENT INSTRUCTIONS. The application of the funds raised for tho relief of soldier unemployment through tho “Poppy Day” appeal is now being closely attended to by th© Returned Soldiers’ Association. Urgent instructions have been issued by the executive sub-committee of the association to the various district branches that immediate endeavours are to bo made to open up relief works. It is estimated that from 700 to 800 ex-sol-diers aro fitill out of employment throughout the Dominion. In Wellington a number of men have already been placed on municipal work, while others are to be provided for to-day. The City Council has agreed to subsidise the “Poppy Day” money pound for pound,' and this precedent will no doubt be followed by other municipal authorities in New Zealand. Tho Nelson City Council has agreed to subsidise the amount available for that district—about £22o—on a pound-for-pound basis, and work has been commenced in the direction of beautifying the city. Christchurch has £784 available for expenditure, but so far it has not been decided how the money is to bo applied.
