July 23—Christchurch Hunt ClubNOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Carbine.”) To-day the Otaki and Auckland meetings open, and the Dunedin meeting concludes. Special trains will run to and from Otaki. The opening event at Otaki will be thf Maiden, for which there are 18 entries*. Among the better-known performers are Five-Highths, Released and Rimutaka Miss Rule has been galloping well at Trentham and should keep the field busy. Battle Knight, who heads the list in tho Flying iiaek Handicap, has a lot oi pace and goes well on a soft track, but has not raced recently. Comic. Savourj and Ben Nevis also are speedy, but Yankee Dan has such a handy weight that he is almost certain to -be sent out favourite. A small field will saddle up for the Taihoa Steeplechase, and backers may trust to Ngakanui, who is a fairly safe conveyance. To Maire also will be ip demand. ' The Raukawa Cup is more open than n usually the case with this event. The Hawera pair, Marqueteur and Volo, arc at the top of the handicap,, and with only four pounds more than Yolo, Man queteur may be considered the better 01 the pair. In fact, he is sure to be on* of the favourites. Tame Fox will carry a lot of support, and judging by Wan {sranui form should be very hard to beat. I Dainty Step is exceptionally well, and i her work at Trentham has been very at j tractive buf the shorter distance on Monday may suit her better. Dissertation should run a eood race, and if the going is very soft that will suit Detroit, j Merry Queen'' will be in the market for _ the Otaki Handicap. Others likely tc tro well are All Cerise. Demoness and Helen Roset. who is iii near the " bottom of the handicap is coming, on : m ;:nd should be improved by the race. The top weight, Kinsem, is likely U go out favourite for the Taipua Handicap. The Fordell representative; should run a great race but she is giving away a lot of weight to useful sprinters like Capping Day. Tari and Astinome. Another who will carry heavy support is Civilform. The lot in the Birthday Welter is not gold, and with all His weight Basso may take beating if reserved for this event Others likely to show up are Manchester and Misty Wave. Racing will begin at Ellerslie at “M a.m. with the first division, of the Jervois Handicap. -The field includes two useful hacks in Te Kuxi and Gold Star. , Shellshock probably will be the favourite for the Maiden Steeplechase..in which his most .serious opposition may come from Master Boris and Strathglass. Voluble, who is bred on jumping lines, should be'-worth-a small risk in the Maiden Hurdles Others in favour are Passin' Thro' and Vagabond. The Great Northern Hurdles looks to be a particularly hard race. Many in the north will stick to Poanui, who is very speedy over the fences, but Mr Cases's representative does not stay well, and should be held 6afe by Hillard. Gladful cannot be left out of calcula- ■ tions, and ICohu i 9 given a great chance ■ by his own party. Alteration and Omahu are in* the boom, and Sea' De'il and Old • Gold are among the milder fancies. Hillard, Omahu. Alteration and Poanui dispute the finish. I There will be a big field for the Corn- ; wall Handicap. Ngata is such a good ► horse that wifh all his weight he is sure • :to run a good race. Glen Canny is re- * : turning to form and he will have the I services of J. O'Shea. Tenterfield and » Tinohoro are likely to carry the confid- \ ence of their connections. If the goin« ! ie very heavy none will be more at home J than Bagdad. Glen Canny may be among » the hardest to shake off at the finish. ] The Great Northern Steeplechase will ; be run on Monday. If Ngata and Omahu » ; start, Mr Bull's bracket will be sent out \ favourite. Lochella has bad a badly- • interrupted preparation, and Coroglen • may have to be taken somewhat on trust, ! seeing that ho has not raced since he ! W as injured. The racing he had at Wa- ; nganui will have improved Kohu, who ; mav be one of the best on the day, pto- • viding he gets through Saturday's race I without harm.
