A ROCK GIRT ISLAND
WHERE THE SHIP STRUCK. Rosalie Bay, the locality of the wreck, is situated on the south side of the Great Barrier Island. Port Tryphena, on the Great Bairier, is 56 miles northeast from Auckland, and it is from, there that the Kato’s party proceeded over the hills to the cliffs overlooking that part of the coast where the. Wiltshire lies. The steamship route from Panama to Auoklarfd takes a vessel past Cape Barrier on the southern end of tba Great Barrier, Island, and Capp Colville, on the northern extremity of Coromandel 'Peninsula. The water there is very deep, and the chart shows between 30 and 40 fathoms quite close to the island. There are tWo lights in the vicinity, one on Cuvier Island and the other on Channel Island.
