Disgraceful scenes were witnessed at the week-end meeting of the Foreign Committee of tho Reichstag. Tho trouble began by Herr Stinmfe stating that the occupation of the Ruhr might not bo such a bad thing after all Herr Schmidt, a Socialist Alinister, sharply condemned the remark, whereupon Dr Helfferich retorted that the Minister need not lose his temper ; others besides Herr Stinnes thought the Allied occupation of the Ruhr might turn out rather a good thing for Germany. Considerable disorder ensued. Herr Breitschend told Dr Helfferich fie ought' to he ashamed of himself. Dr Helfferich replied: “I’ll slap your face in a minute if you don’t shut up.” and added: “You and your friendß little, know where Germany is drifting to.” Tho pandemonium was ended by a threat to suspend the silting In a subsequent debate, Dr Helfforich was reminded that he had written “capital has no patriotism,” while Herr Stiunos was alleged to have publicly said that the Gorman Empire ivas merely a big business proposition.
