EMPLOYMENT ON WHARF
DOES CONVICTION CANCEL? A MAGISTRATE’S COMMENTS. Is a wharf labourer debarred from working on the wharf for a period of 12 months after having been charged with an offence at the court ? The question found a little divided opinion in the Magistrate’sOourt yesterday between the magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., and Mr H. F. O’Leary- A man stood charged with stealing a small quantity of fruit from a ship in port, and in pleading for leniency under the J.P. Act, Mr O’Leary said that the man in question would have to suffer doubly on account of the fact that, being a waterside worker, he could not obtain employment on the wharf again for at loast twelve months. “1 would like to know if that li true,” said the magistrate. “I hare heard that men have got hack on the wharf after six weeks.” Mr O'Leary said he could give the name of a man who, nevertheless, was not so successful at getting back. The magistrate: And I can give you the nanio of a man who did get back within a short period indeed. .
