LIFE-SAVING

ISLAND BAY CLUB’S REPORT. From the annual report of the Island Bay Life-Saving and Surf Club (Mr A. T. Russell, captain, and Mr George Spi'iggens, hon. secretary) we take the following:—“Despite the hard times we are parsing through, the club is financiallv strong. During the year the usual number of races were held, and were keenly contested, although the number of competitors was email, the >yeather at times no doubt accounting for this. The close finishes of the races t>peakg well of 'the good work done by Mr J. Bruce, the club handicapper. Lifesaving displays were given during the season, particularly week-ends. A lifesaving class was formed of the Juvenile Club, and they acquitted themselves well. The general public commented highly on the efficiency of the senior and j unior teams, particularly by the latter. On. several occasions during the season smart rescues were effected by members of the club. Representations were again made to the City Council for electric light to be installed in the shed; but were turned down owing to the heavy expense involved. Further representations were made to the council about the dilapitated condition of the beach in the vicinity of the bathing eheds through fishing nets and offal, etc., lying about the beach. This nuisance was supposed to have been remedied, but it ie .still occurring. A deputation waiteel on the Island Bay Ratepayers* Association and entered an emphatic protest against the fish-landing stage being erected on the eastern side of the bay, in front of the ladies' bathing shed. With a. view to encouraging inter-club competition for life-saving, it is proposed that a shield should be donated by this club for that purpose, and to be competed for annually on the opening day in each year on the Island Bay beach. It is also proposed that lighting be installed in the shed "at an early date, so that members can partake of instruction during the winter months to fit themselves for the coming Reason. The various harrier clubs nave had assistance given them by being allowed to use the shed as a dressing-room in connection with their runs. The afternoon tea fund was self-supporting again this year, everybody enjoying their cup _of tea after coming out of the water. Next season the club will have to purchase two new life-belts, also a new life-line for the reel, as the line on the reel is getting done. We will have to find ways and means of raising this money, as the subscriptions will not allow oi purchasing to this extent. We have great hopes for the future of the club, and would like the support of all our members in making the Island Bay -LifeSaving and Surf Club the strongest and most effective in th<3 district."
