NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By

“Carbine.”)

An exceptionally heavy frost covers ed. tho tracks at Trentham yesterday morning, and in consequence work was a little later than usual iit starting. Tho going was rather heavy Blackmail was the first to work, going five furlongs alone, and doing it well. Trentham Roso ran five furlongs with a youngster from Mr Ebb Simpson’s stable, and was comfortably beaten. Dainty Step and Sunny Corner went soven furlongs together. Dainty Step was a couple of lengths in front when they had gone three furlongs, which was run in 37 sec. Dainty Step was eased a trifle in the straight, and Sunny Corner finished in front of her. Reset did easy work, and moved attractively. lie looks- to have improved since he raced last. Kyoto and Miss Rule wore sent along for five furlongs. Kyoto moved away smartly, but Miss Rule gathered him in in the first couple of furlongs Kyoto was a little in front when the post was reached. Aqtinome, who looked particularly fit, was given "easy work. Manchester, Russet, Fortune Telle* and another were sprinted five fut longs. Manchester and Fortune Tetter went away from the others and kept together till near the post, when Fortune Teller was eased, and Manchester went ahead. , H. Telford, who was in a Wellington- private hospital for some, time, has returned to Trentham. Sturdee has been scratched for the Great Northern Steeples, and Ngata for the Great Northern Hurdles, ao cording to a Press Association message received last evening. Bonetter carried a good deal of North Island money at Dunedin yesterday when she started in tho Birthday Handicap, but sbe failed to run into a place. In the South little notice could have been taken of the fact that Foo Chow had been eased in his work recently, for when he won at Dunedin yesterday he paid a rather short price.

W. Bush received a nasty fall when Indus ca-me down with him in the hurdle race on the second day at Oamaru. It was thought at first that he had broken a collarbone, but he wqa fortunate to escape with nothing more than braises, and he expects to he riding again- next week at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s - meeting. When Mr W. H. Gaisford bought Punka at auction at the Christchurch sales, her late owner, Mr J. B. Reid, stated that he "Would buy her back for 500 gpineas at the end of her racing career. As she has shown no form for a long time and is always more or less unsound, the Dannavirke sportsman will probably) send her hack to Oamaru, says a Christchuroh writer.
