LOWER TRAM FARES

LABOUR COUNCIL RECOMMENDATION. The Wellington Trades and Labour Council has forwarded to the City Council a letter .suggesting that, in view of the surplus profits made by the tramway undertaking laet year, the fares should he reduced. The following resolution of the Trades Council has been sent to the council: — “That, in view of the surplus revenue accruing from the tramway service, the Wellington Trades and Labour Council protests against the high fares at present being charged on the city trams, and respectfully suggests that the City Council should review the matter of concession tickets, so that the workers, at least, who aro now faced with falling wages and intermittent employment, should be allowed to benefit thereby, instead of accumulating an abnormal surplus.” Tbe Mayor (Mr R. A, Wright, M.P.) stated, at the last meeting of the City Council, when the matter was brought up, that an effort would be made in the near future to give the public the benefit of a reduction in fares. The Trades and Labour Council’s representations will probably be discussed at the next meeting of the council.
