ST. PATRICK’S DAY

ANNUAL PROCESSION RECORD CROWD AT SPORTS AND CARNIVAL. DELIGHTFUL WEATHER. Nature relented on Saturday and showered benediction on the sons of Erin and their sympathisers. Leaden skies and rain-soaked streets gave way to brilliant sunshine, and no more pleasing setting could be had for the annual St. Patrick's Day procession and sports. The route of the procession was lined with more spectators than formerly, and the various units in the cavalcade bore more than favourable comparison with its predecessors. Led -by th® bands of tue Irish Pipers, in their Gaelic uniforms, and the Garrison Artillery, the procession left the 'Government Building’s at about 11 o'clock, a little later than scheduled time. < Among many new phases in the procession were numerous of the heavier typo of char-a-banc that have lately sprung up around Wellington, and whose existence has heen something of a problem to the civic authorities, owing to the difficulty of meeting the extra expense of wear and tear of the roads. , There were amusing incidents, or course. A big lorry was designed to carry three tier-loads of gaily dreesed chilaren. Passing the centre of the town the seats, or portion of them, collapsed, and there was a general scrum scramble to get out of the debris. No one was hurt, and the incident only whetted the' appetite of the youthful passengers for more excitement. I here was another lorry, furnished and decorated to caricature the Peace Conference. •Seated round* the table were characters intended to represent the representatives of the Big Five. Only one of them, Mr Lloyd George, could be recognised, and he was greeted with amused cheers along the route. SINN FEIN COLOURS IN FORCE. The -boys of St. Patrick's College and the Marist Brothers' Schools marchedl en masse in the procession. Everyone was decorated with the national colour of Ireland, but it was noticed that the Sinn Fein (Nationalist) colours were more prominent than ever before. la fact the children's tableau, at Newtown Park, which was finely presented, was a representation of the Sinn Fein uag. Almost every phase of social and industrial life in modern Ireland was represented by decorated lorries and wagons. Among notable. tableaux were ‘A Nation unce Again," ‘‘St. Patrick, The Peace Treaty," "Let Us Be Friends.’

AT NEWTOWN PARK. A GREAT GATHERING. At Newtown Park there was a record crowd, the spectators numbering at least ten thousand. There were numerous shows, continuing throughout the evening, from which parents and children, who seemed to ho legion, derived a great deal of interest and amusement. There were the usual. number of amateur athletic events, wrestling, ladies’ races, relay races, pipes competition; dancing, and the spectacular display, by 1000 children. All the events were keenly contested. There were in the vicinity of one hundred entries for the baby show, which aroused the ost interest. Dr Coven, the judge, had a heavy task, and hi« award waa loucuy cheered. ATHLETIC EVENTS. Following are the results of the various eT lfl»vds Handicap, St. Patrick’s College —J. Smith (Iyd), 1; E.
