MIDLAND V. PETONE

LATTEIR MAKE 148. BKTJCE BOWLS WELL. Midilaud and Petone met for the second timo this season at Petone. At the end of the day’s play Petone had made 148 in the first innings, and Midland had lost five wickets for 48. The lat ter team have several good bats still to go, so the game as it stands at present is interesting. Upham w unavoidably absent from the Midland ranks. Petone batted first, ending in Geydes and H. Nicholls, the bowlers being Hutchings and Patrick, both played cautiously, earying the score to- 38, when Geydes succumbed to Hutchings, who found his wicket with a good break ball, Smyrk partnered Nicholls and the pair took the total to 83, when Judd found the former's wicket, the partnership having added 51. The next few wickets did not; add many runs to the score, Finlayson's 11 runs being the highest amongst six batsmen; when the score sheet showed 139 Nicholls was smartly taken by J. Cunningham behind the wickets. The retiring batsman*6 score \vas 63, obtained bv good correct cricket, and was made when runs were badly wanted, for without his total Petone’s innings would havo been a very sorry exhibition. He hit eight fourers during his turn at the wickets, which occupied one hour and twenty minutes The remaining four wickets added nine runs and the innings closed for 148. Midland, with less than an hour to play, started their innings with Baker and J, Cunningham, but did not > make a very good showing with the bat, Hosting five wickets for 46 when stumps were drawn. Baker, 22 not out, wah the only batsman to hold his end up. Patrick was unfortunate in losing his wicket before he got going, being splendidly caught by Parrant right on the long-oir boundary off Brice. The fielding of both teams wae good and clean. Midland showed considerable improvement in this department lately and the catches secured by Parrant and M. Nicholls were fine efforts. The bowlers had a day out with the ball, ten wickets out of fifteen which fell during the day being bowled, Brice (2 for 21) and Finlayson (3 for 21) bowled best for Petone and Bruce (7 for 22) for Midland must be given pride of place for his fine performance; he kept a good length, breaking slightly from the off. It wtas unfortunate mat he did not bowl earlier in the innings; he eertinly is not used as much as he should be in his club. Details of the play are as follow; PETONE.—First Innings.
