PROBLEAI SOLVING,

.The results- from Auckland .and Nelson are now availalble in connection with the vyorltLvvide problem-solving contest conducted 'by the Good Cbnlpaniion Chess Problem Club on George Washington’s birthday (February 22ud). Air G. F. Dodds, a well-known Congress player, won the Nelson contest, with seven solutions in 2.) hours. In Auckland the first prize was won by Mr D. J. Jones, with six solutions, while Messrs C. E. Hay and 45. Coyne, each with five solutions, were the up. , The Dunedin, Christchurch ahd Wellington .results appeared in our issue of February 27th. The best New Zealand tallies are;—

Twenty-seven New Zealand solvers did hot reach the 50 per cent, mark (twelve two-movo problems were submitted for solution). Six of New Zealand’s most expert solvers were, unfortunately, unable to toko part—viz., F. A. L. Kuskop (Wellington). H. L. Anderson and W. S. King (both of Christchurch), R. A. Cleland and L. D. Coombs (both of Dunedin), and E. A. Le Petit (Invercargill). MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. The return match for rung one on tho Wellington Chess Club’s ladder was concluded oil Tuesday evening, the final tally being W. E. Mason (challenger) three, wins, A. W. Gyles one win. Air Mason thus regains the rung he lost to Air Gyles last month.

An attendance of two dozen players at the clubroom on Saturday evening ,is a, clear .indication that the “slack season”' is over."and that members are busy getting into form-for a season that will be starting earlier than usual, and that promises to be of more than ordinary interest.

In connection with the proposed tourney to decide club championship of New .Zealand, tire Nelson C.C. suggests that the smaller clubs be only asked to play eight men each, instead of 12, as suggested by tho Canterbury C.C. in initiating this contest. This appears to be; the only point now requiring settlement, the other proposals of the Canterbury club having been unanimously agreed to. At a- joint meeting of Alasterton, Greytown and Featherston players, held last week, it was arranged to hold a tourney at an early date to decide the iVaimrapa championship (at presentheld by Air J. A. Connell, of Clareyille). The tourney -is to .be got off in two sections, tho north and south champions playing oft . for the title. Mr F. : ;J„- Broo&Hv the Ngaio president,/ is organising a team to visit Palmerston North during the Easter holidays.
