NOVEL JOY-RIDE

STEWARDS BORROW A STEAAIER. CRUISE ROUND THE HARBOUR. Fpr endeavouring to make a cruise round the, harbour in the Harbour Board’s steam launch Huia without permission, two stewards of the liner Paparoa, Robert Henry Jamieson and Andrew Timothy Ryan, aged 18 years and 20 years respectively, were brought before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. It was stated -by the police that the launch Huia was moored alongside the Glasgow wharf at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday, for the night. Yesterday morning when, the crew went to board the launch it was missing from its berth. A search was made, and the vessel was found at 9 a.m.j at the end of the King’s wharf. Constable Peter Munro, of Hie waterfront police, investigated the circumstances, and discovered a piece of paper, on which was written a name, lying in the launch. With this clue Constable Alunro went on to the liner Paparoa, and after making inquiries arrested the two accused on a charge of unlawfully converting the Huia to their use. It was stated in the evidence that the two men decided to have a “joy ride” in the launch, and set out from the Glasgow wharf to enjoy themselves. They did not proceed far, however, as they could not master the intricacies of the machinery, and eventually they were satisfied to bring the oraft to the end of the King’s wharf, where they tied it up and left it. The accused were fined £5 5s each for their prank.
