SOCIAL WELFARE WORK . CASES CONSIDERABLY INCREASE LAST MONTH. REPORT TO HOSPITAL BOARD. The following report, submitted by the social -welfare committee, was adopted 'by the Wellington. Hospital Board at the monthly meeting' held yesterday: — “The volume of outdoor business during June showed a considerable increase over that of the preceding month, 118 cases being dealt with against 97 cases in May. Compared with the corresponding month last year there was also an increase, the figures being 118 cases as against 106 ,J The grounds of application in the cases dealt with were as below, where a comparison with the preceding month , .is also shown:

The indoor daily average was: 1921 (95), 1920 (120), 1919 (95)/ . * THE! UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEMIn speaking to clause 3 relating to relief works for the unemployed the chairman of the committee, Mr G. Petherick, said that already a deputation had waited upon the Labour Department, and Mr Fraser had expressed his willingness to assist werever possible. .However, there were still cases which could be dealt with. He recommended that the board should communicate with the Minister for Labour in regard to the position. i Mr Windley did not think" it was necessary to form a deputation to wait upon the Minister. If the committee had power to offer assistance independently, why the hesitation? Mr P. Castle maintained that the question of unemployment was not really as acute as the figures showed. The recommendation was adopted.
