AUSTRALIAN FRUITS
EXCELLENT-PROSPECTS ON / LONDON MARKET. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received .July S 6. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 25. Mr .Gilfillan, the Victorian Trade Commissioner, informs the Australian Press Association that the first shipment of Shepparton canned fruits turned out. splendidly. The trade representatives were pleased with the flavour, colour and packing. He is doubtful whether Australia ought to attempt to follow slavishly the Californian methods of grading and packing where conditions arc totally different. Probably it would ho better for Australia to adopt her own grading system and names, maintaining the liighest standard. Tbe trade generally viewed Australian canned fruits .favourably. They are qcute able to build up a reputation on tbetr basis. The position was the same with regard to dried fruits. Australian jam exporters ought to realise that the period of lack of confidence had passed. After sounding the market he found that there were grounds for hopefulness provided only the best grade strawberry, black currant, raspberry and apricot jams wc-re sent. Inferior jams, which under wartime conditions were made saleable in large quantities, were now unmarketable.
