QUIET PERIOD REPtRTED FINANCIAL STRINGENCY PREVENTS EXPANSION. OPERATIONS IN HAND.

Tn consequence of the extreme financial embarrassment of the City Council pending the receipt of the rates, the notices for which have not been circulated to the ratepayers, general works in and around the city are practically at a standstill. Only those works which call for urgent attention are at present being prosecuted. The relaying of the tramway tracks in Manners street and Courtenay place h.T*e been completed, and the gangs have not been put on to further work at a similar nature. Shortly, however, the renewal of the lines around the Basin Reserve and in that vicinity will bo commenced. The director of reserves has under his -supervision several gangs enga.ged on reserves* improvement works. The'new golf links at Berhampore have now been 'completed, and the men were last week •transferred to the site of the proposed Prince of Wales Park, for the formation of which a sum of £750 was raised last year as a result of the special football match played before the Prince. The men would otherwise have to bodiacharged. Another gang of 57 men is also being employed in gorse-eutting on the reserve at the top of Aro street, adjoining the Mitohelltawn school. The ground will be cleared for tree-plant-rag purposes, and after a period of some months large trees will be planted. .THE £750.600 LOAN. FOR IMPORTANT WORKS. The allocation of the city loan of £730,000 tty be placed on the London market and the arranging of details in connection with the prospectus, will be the subject of a special meeting of the City Council finance committee today. The city engineer will make certain recommendations in regard to the -allocation of the money, and these, if 'approved, will be placed before a special meeting of the council for confirmation. Members of the council have been 'summoned to attend a meeting for this proposal on Friday evening. The prospectus will be dispatched by the mail which leaves New Zealand on August ■Snd. - -
