THE MARINE KING
“FAME” FOR NEW ZEALANDER.
An amusing instance of the way in which the aura of fame can be cast about by an innocent citizen when abroad is related by an Aucklander at present on a visit to England. The letter is written from Newport Nows, and enclosed is a clipping from the “Times-Herald” of that city, which in tog typo represents the visitor as a New Zealand marine king. This of itself is a pretty large, order, but in the artiole which follows the readei is further impressed by the announcement that “Among the passengers aboard the Rimutaka is Mr —; —, of New Zealand, who is a millionaire shipowner there, and considered one of the richest men in New Zealand.” The gentleman in question has nothing to do with ships, and in his letter expresses a shrewd suspicin tlffat one of his fallow-passengers m a- fit of jocular exuberance supplied an inquiring journalist with • the interesting “copy” about New Zealand’s millionaire marine king. The foot that the newspaper gave three bold headings to the choice item of 'news illustrates how a hoax can be perpetrated on an unsuspecting publio by an irresponsible joker. ;
