NEW PLAYING AREA

PORTION OF TOWN BELT. TECHNICAL SCHOLARS TO HAVE GROUNDS. A letter from the town clerk was read at last evening’s meeting of the Wellington Technical Sohool Board regarding the board’s wish to secure the use of a piece of the town belt near Rolleston street as. a playing area fos pupils at the new Technical School. The town clerk said the council was willing to grant a piece of land on a 21-yeanB 1 lease at a rental of £5 per annum, a recreation ground to be constructed to the council’s satisfaction within three years. Tho proposed playing ground was 160 ft by 400 ft, and the city engineer estimated the cost of the formation at £4OOO. The chairman (Mr W. H. Bennett) said this was the nearest accessible portion of the town belt to the new college, and could be made good for football, cricket, etc. Originally he asked for about five acres of ground, and be thought still that they should ask for additional ground for at least two tennis courts. Meantime, the offer ought to be accepted. The ground was part of what was known as the Prince’s Park, for which the Rugby Union had raised about £7OO. The students of the college contributed about £7O towards the park, and he thought the board might nslc the reserves committee of the City Council to band that money back for use in tile preparation of the ground. Mr Bennett thought it might bo possible to get the work done at little cost to the board.
