7 PER CENT. ON COUNCIL’S OVERDRAFT. , POWER BOARD~CONFERENCE. At the ordinary meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council held last week, the Mayor (Mr F. H. Mather) presiding, correspondence was received, as under: — From the Secretary to the Treasury, granting permission to the council to raise 7 per cent, on its overdraft for the current year. - From the Department of Health, drawing attention to sections 55 and 57 of the Health Act, requiring a definition of lodging- and eating-houses in the council’s by-laws. The general manager pointed out that this was being dealt with in the drafting of the new by-laws. From the Wellington City Council, intimating that the reserves committee of the City Council would he pleased to meet representatives of the Borough Council for the purpee of discussing matters in connection with improvements to Day’s Bay. The Mayor stated that a letter had ‘been written to the City Council asking them to state specifioially the nature of the proposals, and that the question of meeting the City Council’s reserves committee be held over until a reply had been received thereto. PROPOSED POWER BOARD. From the Upper Hutt Town Board advising that a date for a conference of various local bodies, with a view to forming a Power Board, had not yet been fixed, pending arrangements being made with the Minister for Public Works to have an engineer of his department in attendance at such meetmg, • From the Wanganui Borough Council, advising that a supply of Norfolk pines was not available in Wanganui. From Messrs Mazengarb, Hay and McAllister, requesting that the matter of complying with the notice to remove a shed which had been erected by Mr S. F. Fisher without having first obtained a permit for its erection, be allowed to stand over until Mr Fisher’s return from England. As Mr Fisher is expected to be back in the Dominion within four or five months, this was agreed to. NEW LIFE JACKETS. From the N.Z. Shipowners’ Federation, advising that cork life-belts in good condition would not be condemned, and only belts not fit for service would be required to be replaced by ndw lifejackets. On the recommendation of the finance committee, payments were authorised as follow: —District fund account, £737 10s: tprry service account, £2IBB 10s. The general manager reported that the s.s. Duchess took up the running on the Ist inst., and that everything has been working in an exceedingly satisfactory manner since. Work necessitating some four or five weeks has had to'be pint in hand on the s.s. Cobar, and it is hoped that die will be available for service some time early in August. Daring the month of June six buud'lng permits were granted for buildings, of an estimated value of £2006. For the first quarter of the present financial year, twenty-nine buildings permits have been issued for buildings of a total estimated value of £11,357.
